I wondered if it was busy because it was Easter weekend, but Wolf said seeing 200 visitors in a day is not uncommon. When I arrived in early April, there were more than 20 people there to enjoy Salvation Mountain. I met the docent on duty, a man solely named Wolf, who said the temperatures around early April are typically at least in the mid-90s, if not hotter. The trek was a three-hour drive from Los Angeles, and even Joshua Tree campers must carve out two hours to make it to Niland, California. Visiting Salvation Mountain is a pilgrimage, even for those in nearby desert cities like Indio and Palm Springs. ![]()
